Cashew (Kaju)

Cashew (Anacardium occidentale) is a tropical tree native to southeastern Brazil, renowned for its delicious nuts and unique cashew apple. This versatile plant thrives in various climates, making it a significant agricultural product in countries like India. There are several notable varieties of cashew, including Ullal-1, which yields approximately 19.6 kg of nuts per tree and features medium-sized nuts with a high shelling percentage. Ullal-2 and Ullal-3 are similar in characteristics, with early flowering and robust yields. VRI-3, released in Tamil Nadu, is known for its adaptability, while Bhaskara, developed in Goa, offers resilience against pests due to its late flowering habits. The BPP-5 variety stands out as the highest yielder at 42.1 kg of dry nuts per tree, and the H-130 hybrid is notable for its cluster-bearing ability and large nut size. Cashew trees prefer well-drained soils and thrive in tropical climates with annual rainfall between 50 cm to 250 cm.
